Aspi carried out more than 110 thousand interventions in 2023 for the modernization of the highway network

An important balance sheet full of figures and targets achieved, prepared by Autostrade per l’Italia towards the end of 2023. Strongly committed to the renewal and development of the more than 3000 kilometers of motorway network under management, the Group evaluated the results of the activities carried out during the year and outlined the challenges that await it next year, especially given the start of the construction phases of major works.

In 2023 alone, Aspi has activated and managed more than 110,000 interventions with an economic commitment of over 1.6 billion euros to continue or initiate work to maintain maintenance activities, create major new infrastructures necessary to cope with the saturation of some segments. To continue modernization efforts of highway assets. An economic commitment with significant impacts on the region covering the entire supply chain, generating 3 euros of related activities for every euro invested.

In detail, over half a billion spent on network maintenance includes around 1.1 billion euros spent on modernization investments (over 700 million) and new business (about 400 million euros); These activities include the installation of more than 300 major construction sites.

We can define 2023 as the year in which the foundations of the implementation of ASPI’s important investment plan were laid, with the launch of the preparatory activities called 0 lots, which accelerated the laying of the foundations of the major works envisaged by ASPI’s industrial plan. Gronda di Genova, Passante di Bologna and a number of motorway extensions in the most trafficked nodes and sections of the network. In order to enter the heart of the implementation phase in 2024, preparation areas were opened at the beginning of the year to start the implementation activities of new projects. Those already completed were also added to these activities. Opening in 2023: Opening in September of the 5th lane on the A8 in the section between the Milan North barrier and the A9 Lainate-Como-Chiasso motorway, with a total investment of approximately 150 million euros. The first 3.5 km of the 4th dynamic lane of the A4 between the junctions Viale Certosa and Sesto San Giovanni in the Milan region is also open to traffic, a first in Italy equipped with a technologically highly automatic accident and traffic anomaly detection system (Automatic ) Incident Detection). By the end of the year, another 2.5 kilometer dynamic lane will be opened northwards, starting from the Cormano junction.

Last year, more than 14 million hours of work were carried out on the construction site with the participation of more than 8 thousand people: a dense program carried out through timely planning, especially for maintenance work, with the aim of minimizing night time intervals, possible traffic troubles. Compared to the increase in the number of construction sites operating in the network, last year saw a further decrease in occupational accidents. Specifically, in 2023, ASPI Group’s accident rate decreased by approximately 20% compared to 2022, confirming the positive trend of recent years that saw a decrease in accidents of over 60%. This result was also possible thanks to the innovation of standards and processes and the full participation of people in the path of cultural transformation undertaken by the Group.

Thanks to the work carried out in 2023, it was possible to bring the big plan for upgrading the systems in the tunnels to 84% progress, and it began to comply with the safety standards required by European legislation.

The plan to modernize key highway assets (tunnels, viaducts and safety barriers) will continue in 2024, together with highway improvement initiatives, with an investment estimate of approximately €1.4 billion, ensuring that the annual maintenance plan continues approximately. 0.4 billion euros

The synergies developed within the group guarantee the progress of the activities that started with Tecne, the country’s second largest engineering company with more than a thousand employees, and Amplia, the leading player in the construction world. Group companies involved in the development of the technologies also played a fundamental role. In fact, thanks to Movyon, it has become increasingly important to use technology in the modernization of the network and to equip new works with digital equipment that can make the highway presence the mobility of the future.

“The group’s commitment to asset development continues apace. The highway network is and will continue to be the backbone of goods and people mobility for the country. Our aim is to make it increasingly modern, digital and sustainable in environmental, social and economic terms. The number of construction sites opened and managed shows that important steps have been taken in the renewal of the network, which has a complexity unique in the world. Every day, the workers involved witness the massive work being carried out, primarily to lay the foundation for new work needed to adapt key points of the network to current traffic demand. This is the great challenge that we started and will continue to pursue precisely because of the complexity that characterizes it,” says Roberto Tomasi, CEO of Autostrade per l’Italia.
