Residents of Sicily who travel to the island by plane from Rome or Milan will be able to request a (partial) refund of the ticket fee. Sicily Region’s “SiciliaPei” platform has become operational. Who can benefit from the discount launched to combat the phenomenon of high flight prices during holidays and how does it work?
Passengers who currently hold a ticket purchased from 10 November 2023 for flights between 1 December 2023 and 31 December 2024 can apply for a refund. The planned routes are between Sicily airports and Rome airports (Fiumicino and Ciampino), Milan (Malpensa). , Linate and Bergamo-Orio al Serio), both outbound and return, and with all airlines carrying passengers.
The economic contribution consists of a 25% discount on the total cost of a single route (including all taxes, expenses and accessories invoiced by the carrier). The Region of Sicily grants an additional 25% discount to disabled residents with a disability rate of 67%, students or low-income residents (Isee less than 9,360 euros).
The procedure is electronic only. You must access the platform with Spid or an electronic ID card. The user then has a screen with several fields to fill in: He must enter his personal data, flight data (fare, route and number) and the IBAN code through which the refund will be made. Additionally, a document in PDF format, a photocopy of the ticket and a boarding pass must be attached. Contribution requests can be made via the platform within 30 days from the flight date.
Regional President Renato Schifani says, “Efforts to implement concrete policies against high flight prices have finally produced results for the benefit of Sicilian citizens. The region has done its part by respecting the announced deadlines, now it is its turn.” Companies participating in the initiative have improved their reservation systems, allowing passengers to benefit from discounts when purchasing tickets. The increase in wages we have witnessed during this Christmas holiday confirms the validity of our initiative, because it is easing. “Partly, the burden is increasing.”
The Infrastructure and Transport department’s intervention provides approximately $33 million between regional and state funds. According to Infrastructure Council Member Alessandro Aricò, this is “a concrete measure for air transport in Sicily; we intend to extend it to other routes connecting the island with the rest of the country. The discovery announcement was published less than a month ago, in the meantime four companies have participated: AeroItalia, Wizzair Malta, Ita Airways, Wizzair Hungary. But the call remains open for other carriers to contribute as well”.
