EU-China summit. Xi Jinping warns against competition

– China and the EU should not see each other as rivals, argues Xi Jinping.

A one-day EU-China summit took place in Beijing on Thursday, where Xi Jinping met with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel. This is the first such event in the past four years.

During the call, the Chinese leader called for a joint response to global challenges and cooperation to promote global stability and prosperity. Xi Jinping warned the European Union against competing with Beijing while assuring that China wants the EU to become its main economic partner, as well as in the field of technological cooperation.

China And EU They should not regard each other as rivals despite different systems, they should not limit cooperation because of competition, and they should not lead to confrontation because of their differences, Xi Jinping said.

Let us not forget that Von der Leyen has spoken harshly about China in recent days and assured that Europe will defend its economy.

‘We have common interests’

During the meeting, Michel stated that the EU wants stable relations with China that will be profitable for both sides. He stressed that the EU will continue to promote European values, “including human rights and democracy”.

“China is the EU’s largest trading partner, but there are clear inequalities and disparities that we need to address,” said Von der Leyen.

After the meeting, Von der Leyen posted a short message on X’s website, saying she had had a “good and honest” conversation with President Xi on “the key challenges facing a world where geopolitical frictions are increasing.”

The head of the European Commission added that the summit agreed that both sides have a common interest in sustainable trade relations.

Biden-Xi Jinping meeting

In mid-November, Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met for the first time in a year. Both sides agreed that the US and China would resume direct contacts between their militaries. Both the Americans and Chinese agreed that their political leaders should more often calmly discuss the most pressing issues on bilateral, global and regional issues. The main topics of Joe Biden’s conversation with Xi Jinping included the Russian-Ukrainian war, the escalation of the conflict in the Middle East and the dispute over the status of Taiwan.

It was also indicated that Washington and Beijing will compete responsibly so that, as the whole world expects, there will be no confrontation or a new “cold war.”
