€40.7 billion comes for employees and retirees; the famous thirteenth will brighten the Christmas of approximately 35 million Italians: 16.1 million retirees and 18.9 million employed workers. Some have already received it, others are still waiting, but by what day should the thirteenth be paid “by law”?
Thirteenth: how and when to pay
The thirteenth bonus, also called the Christmas bonus, was originally a bonus given by the employer to its employees on the occasion of Christmas without any obligation. Later in 1937 the additional monthly salary compared to 12 annual salaries was included in the national collective bargaining agreement for industrial workers and was extended to workers in 1946.
The amount varies depending on the months worked. If the activities continue for less than 12 months, one-twelfth of the monthly salary since the previous December is paid. The thirteenth salary is also paid in respect of periods of absence, as long as it is paid in cases such as maternity leave, marriage leave, absence due to illness, accident. On the contrary, parental leave does not accrue in cases of absence due to illness of the child or absence due to unpaid leave. In any case, the amount of the Christmas bonus never corresponds to the monthly salary because the thirteenth month’s salary is taxed differently, less social security and tax contributions. In a part-time employment contract, the thirteenth salary is accrued in proportion to the hours actually worked (e.g. 50% for 20 hours of part-time work per week, 75% for 30 hours of part-time work per week). ).
By law, the thirteenth salary is paid in December of each year, but it is paid on different days depending on whether these individuals are public or private employees or retired. Let’s see on a case by case basis.
Thirteenth dates for public and private employees
Those receiving pension, social assistance and disability pensions received the thirteenth in their current accounts on Friday, December 1. Payments for retirees who do not have a loan and collect their payments in cash at post offices ended on Tuesday, December 5.
The schedule for private sector employees is different: The payment date varies depending on what the collective agreement determines. In any case, the 13th month’s salary must be paid by Christmas Eve.
The thirteenth salary for commercial employees is expected to be paid by December 24, but the employer may bring forward this date. For metalworkers, the Christmas bonus usually arrives on Christmas Eve.
However, the dates of payment of the thirteenth salary for state employees are determined in Annex 1 of Decree Law No. 350/2001. In particular, payments for kindergarten and primary school teachers will be made on December 14, and for temporary substitute teaching staff two days later. On December 15, it will be the turn of the personnel managed by the Provincial Treasury Directorates with a fixed expenditure role, as will all other public employees on December 16.
