Head of European Commission: Billions will reach Poland before the end of the year

– The European Commission will make available 5 billion euros for the modernization of energy systems before the end of the year – confirmed the head of the European Commission, Urusla von der Leyen.

Ursula von der Leyen provided the information during a joint conference with Donald Tusk.

– We have a common goal to build the rule of law together and make up for lost time. Payments will be prepared and I look forward to talking about the milestones. We will work on launching KPO. I am pleased with the steps you want to take and the resolution of the current dilemmas, said von der Leyen.

Donald Tusk, in turn, added that “an avalanche of decisions has begun.” – They are the first and it is a lot of money. However, the most important thing was not the money, but the rule of law and our common values. Poles did not agree with a Poland without the rule of law, so if we say today that this positive step has begun and that big European money, that is, our money, is starting to flow to Poland, he said.

The Prime Minister added that Poland would join the European Public Prosecutor’s Office. – This is a signal that in Poland we take the issue of the rule of law very seriously. The key was the restoration of the rule of law in Poland. Without this, neither the European Commission would have agreed to the first payments nor would I have bothered you and the Commission, Tusk added.

Money from KPO

Budget and Administration Commissioner Johannes Hahn previously stated that the European Commission will certainly “find ways to help Poland” obtain the EU funds it is entitled to. This concerns a loan from the Reconstruction Fund after the corona pandemic, namely the amount of 111 billion euros from the National Recovery Plan and the Cohesion Fund, frozen by Brussels in connection with the dispute over the rule of law.

The commissioner added that there is “no doubt” that the new government is “moving in the right direction when it comes to the rule of law”. However, he emphasized that it is not about an immediate transfer of cash, but about unlocking the possibility of obtaining it.

His words provoked a number of reactions in Poland, most of which reflect surprise at the European Commission’s previous signals. So far, the EC has maintained that Poland must absolutely meet all milestones to be able to unblock funds from the KPO.
