Labor inspection: PostNL workers overloaded

Employees at PostNL distribution centers are physically overworked. The labor inspection reached this conclusion after inspections at various distribution centers of the postal and parcel company.

During the inspections, the supervisory authority found that employees were overworked and that sufficient precautions were not taken in this regard. For example, workers were moving very heavy packages from one vehicle to another and there was a lack of tools to make the job easier.

In the Netherlands, workplace health and safety risks are required to be recorded in a risk inventory and assessment (RI&E). A survey shows PostNL employees receive twice as many complaints as the industry average. The labor inspectorate also suspects workers are working more night shifts than allowed by law.

Many employees came to the company through employment agencies. The Labor Inspectorate will therefore conduct further investigations into the role of temporary employment agencies in working conditions.

In response to NOS, PostNL said the results were taken very seriously. “The health and well-being of our people is very important.” The labor inspectorate now demands employers to improve working conditions.
