Labor Inspectorate: Asylum seekers worked illegally in parcel warehouse

A labor inspection found four asylum seekers working illegally in the warehouse of a postal and courier company. They probably received little or no pay.

The labor inspector reported that those present at the warehouse in Alphen aan den Rijn quickly sorted thousands of packages. When inspectors entered, the two asylum seekers quickly hid in the toilet. From there they were finally caught by the police.

The four refugees came from Syria and were living in different refugee centres. Asylum seekers must apply for a work permit before they can work in the Netherlands. The Syrians did not have this in their pockets.

The employer, the client, and the employment agencies involved will likely be fined. The labor inspectorate does not want to disclose which companies are involved. PostNL states that this is not one of their warehouses.

Lift heavy packages

A labor inspection this week concluded that workers at PostNL distribution centers were subjected to excessive physical stress. They were lifting packages that were very heavy and had no tools to make their job easier.

Christmas is a very busy time for parcel and postal companies as many Christmas cards are sent and products are ordered. “But being busy is never an excuse for workers to work unfairly, unsafely or unhealthy,” says the Labor Inspectorate.
