Peasants’ protest in Medyka suspended. The minister has promised that

On Saturday, Agriculture Minister Czesław Siekierski met with farmers protesting at the Medyka border crossing in Podkarpacie. Decisions have been made.

Farmers from the organization ‘Podkarpacka scammed village’ have been blocking the border crossing in Medyka since November 23. Their demands include: corn subsidies, extra money for liquidity loans and no increase in agricultural taxes next year.

Minister Siekierski assured that farmers’ expectations will be met, but that will take time. The leader of the “village deceived by Podkarpacka”, Roman Kondorów, in turn, said after a conversation with the minister that the protest would be suspended from Sunday from 8 a.m. until January 2 or 3. He added that if he receives a written statement from the Prime Minister that the demands will be implemented, the protest is unlikely to resume.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Agriculture Minister Michał Kołodziejczak, who said that the government of Mateusz Morawiecki promised PLN 1 billion in subsidies for corn, but had not included any funds for this purpose in the budget.

Siekierski promises to meet the demands

– We discussed these demands with the Minister of Finance, in the presence of Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and there is acceptance when it comes to subsidies for corn. An application has already been submitted to the European Commission for acceptance in this matter. Money has been set aside for corn subsidies, Minister Siekierski said.

Siekierski claimed that a legal process has been put in place that will allow local governments to exempt farmers from tax increases next year. As he said, local governments will receive this amount back in 2025.

He added that the budget law also provides money for subsidies on liquidity loans in the amount of PLN 2.5 billion, with the possibility of increasing it.
