I have decided to veto the 2024 budget bill, which includes PLN 3 billion for public media, President Duda said.
Parliament is working on next year’s budget law. The document was drafted by Donald Tusk’s cabinet, but is largely based on assumptions made by Mateusz Morawiecki’s government.
Revenues are planned at PLN 682 billion, and expenditure at PLN 866 billion. The budget gap will therefore amount to PLN 184 billion. The project maintains funds for the 800 plus social program, as well as for the 13th and 14th pension. In addition, taxpayer money was earmarked for the “Active Parent” program announced by Donald Tusk. The project also assumes a 30% increase in teacher salaries. and increasing funding for local governments. It also included a provision granting almost PLN 3 billion to state media.
The bill was supported by 244 of the 270 MPs present. Law and Justice MPs did not participate in the vote as they had left the House before the earlier vote.
The president vetoes the budget bill
– There can be no permission for this, given the blatant violation of the Constitution and the principles of a democratic constitutional state. Public media must first be repaired reliably and in accordance with the law, Andrzej Duda said.
The president also announced that he will submit his own project to the Sejm just after Christmas, including on increases for teachers and other expenses planned in the budget law. – Due to the above, I call on the Chairman of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia, and the Chairman of the Senate, Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, to urgently convene a meeting of both Houses to discuss and approve the project this year. said.
The president also pointed out that an attempt to finance public media through a budget law (by the parliamentary majority) is “unacceptable” in the current situation. – In my bill, all other budget expenditures – including salary increases for teachers – will be maintained – he noted.
