Pay increases for teachers. The President’s bill was submitted to the Sejm

The presidential bill with pay increases for teachers, but without PLN 3 billion for the illegally taken over public television, has been submitted to the Sejm.

According to the information available on the Sejm website, President Andrzej Duda on Wednesday submitted a draft law on special solutions for the implementation of the Budget Law for 2024. The draft was sent to the Legislative Bureau for an opinion.

The head of the President’s Chancellery, Grażyna Ignaczak-Bandych, announced that the proposed law provides for pay increases for teachers, but does not take into account PLN 3 billion for “illegally taken over public television”.

The president vetoed the budget bill

Before Christmas, Andrzej Duda announced that he refused to sign the budget law, which included funds: on TVP and Polish Radio. “There can be no permission for this given the blatant violation of the Constitution and the principles of a democratic constitutional state. Public media must first be repaired reliably and in accordance with the law,” the president wrote on the X platform.

He also announced that after the holidays he would submit his own project on, among other things, raises for teachers and other expenses planned in this law. He also called on the presidents of the Sejm and Senate to “urgently convene a meeting of both Houses to consider and approve the project this year.”

“An attempt to finance the public media through a budget bill (by the parliamentary majority) is unacceptable in the current situation. In my bill, all other budget expenditures – including salary increases for teachers – will be maintained,” Duda said.
