Germany has broken a record in arms exports. How much went to Ukraine?

Germany has approved arms shipments worth a record 11.7 billion euros this year. A third of all exports went to Ukraine.

The previous record was broken in 2021, when Berlin approved arms deliveries worth 9.35 billion euros. Compared to 2023, this is an increase of almost 25%, and taking into account 2022 and 2023 – by 40%. more.

According to the dpa agency, this data comes from the German Ministry of Economic Affairs. It was received by Sevim Dagdelen, member of the Bundestag and representative of the left-wing party Die Linke.

The overview provided by the ministry shows that of this amount, 6.15 billion euros were arms deliveries, and the remaining 5.67 billion euros were other defense items.

Nearly 90 percent of all supplies were received by member states of the European Union and NATO, as well as by Ukraine, Japan, Australia, South Korea and other countries where “arms exports are controlled in the same way as among NATO allies.”

Germany sent weapons worth 4 billion euros to Ukraine

A third of all exports worth €4.15 billion approved between January 1 and December 12, 2023 were sent to Ukraine. Other countries, including Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, received weapons worth around €1.76 billion.

Dagdelen criticized the record arms export figures and said the governing coalition could instead “finally start investing in the necessary infrastructure and education in Germany.”

The Federal Republic’s budget for next year assumes an increase in military aid expenditure to Ukraine to 8 billion euros. Since February 2022, the government of Olaf Scholz has provided the authorities in Kiev with humanitarian, financial and military aid worth more than 25 billion euros.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has been going on for 22 months and has become the largest armed conflict in Europe since the end of World War II and the fall of Nazi Germany in 1945.
