Tusk’s government made a decision for which he had previously criticized the PiS government

The government of Donald Tusk has decided to further expand controls at the border with Slovakia. When the PiS government introduced them, KO politicians argued that they were unnecessary.

The Ministry of the Interior and Administration, led by Marcin Kierwiński of the Civic Coalition, decided to extend temporary border controls at the Polish-Slovak border until February 1, 2024.

The Ministry of the Interior and Administration explained that this happened after “analyzing the current situation on this part of the state border.”

The PiS government decided to introduce controls in October last year. due to the growing wave of illegal migration of people who supposedly called they traveled along the Balkan route from Greece and Bulgaria to Slovakia and Poland, and finally to Germany.

Expansion of controls at the border with Slovakia. Before the elections, KO criticized PiS for this

According to Onet, the decision of Donald Tusk’s government on the situation at the border is surprising, because when the controls were introduced in the autumn, the then opposition believed that they were unnecessary and were mainly an “election stunt”.

– PiS implements the scenario in which Poland leaves the European Union – said in October the then KO MP Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, today the Minister of Culture, who put the public media into liquidation.

Onet asked the Ministry of the Interior and Administrative Affairs what happened when PO politicians, who previously believed that border controls were unnecessary, now expanded them themselves. The editors have not received a response.

“They didn’t know what was really going on.”

Local Law and Justice activists are speaking directly about the new government’s decision. – They criticized because they had no knowledge of what really happened – says Piotr Bąk, starosta of the Tatra Mountains and leader of PiS in Podhale.

Border Guard data show that after controls were introduced at border crossings with Slovakia, the number of illegal immigrants entering Poland from this country fell dramatically. In September, border guards arrested 823 people, in October 583, but only three in November, and zero in December.
