Over 24 thousand euros. This is the “heart attack” water bill received by a 96-year-old young man from Sassuolo, Modena province, who recently received a painful surprise in his mailbox. The heroine of the story, Giuseppina Giavelli, is a widow accustomed to very different amounts when it comes to household items, a few tens of euros at most. Luckily, the old lady noticed the exaggerated amount before the amount was debited directly from her bank account and immediately sought an explanation from Hera, the company that manages the water service.
A real shock for a 96-year-old woman, according to the person directly involved Modena Magazine: “I’m lucky my heart is still strong, otherwise I would have ended up like the 88-year-old Imperial who received a 15,000-euro bill in the days before Christmas and died two days later of a heart attack. The 96-year-old man’s “real” bill, which was always up to date with his previous payments, was actually much lower: 55 euros, not 24 thousand. The woman then told her nephew to call Hera to clarify the situation and block the payment through the bank before the direct debit, which was scheduled for January 23. Fortunately, the company’s response came quickly and clarified the amount, which was exaggerated to say the least. Learning that the problem was actually caused by a significant water leak in the private system, 96-year-old Hera will now be able to benefit from the “Leakage Fund” specially designed for such situations. If the required documents are presented, almost the entire amount will be refunded: in fact, only the consumption payment plus a small deduction is required.
