Let us not forget that farmers are protesting against the uncontrolled inflow of agricultural goods from Ukraine. Although there is an embargo on grain, other agricultural products pose a problem. In the meantime, the EU has no plans to introduce restrictions for the time being.
Growers are concerned that sugar imports from Ukraine to the EU have increased 20 times in the 2022/2023 marketing year, and this season these quantities could be up to 35 times higher. “The size of the increase in imports is disproportionately large in relation to the possibilities to use extra sugar,” we read.
Although Ukraine is still fighting the Russian aggressor, “the country exports, especially to neighboring countries, agricultural raw materials produced according to different standards and therefore cheaper.” One of them is sugar.
Ukraine becomes a tycoon
“After the implementation of autonomous trade measures (ATM), unrestricted imports of sugar from Ukraine to the EU increased 20 times in the 2022/2023 marketing year, while in the 2023/2024 season these quantities could be up to 35 times higher than during the 2023/2024 season. the quota period set out in the Agreement on the Association between the EU and the AU,” said the National Association of Sugar Beet Growers.
The prospect of increasing sugar sowing and production production by around 20% in the 2024/2025 marketing year. will affect Ukraine’s export capabilities, which will exceed 1 million tons – it was added.
The association warns that “the scale of the increase in imports is disproportionate to the possibilities for using additional sugar, distorts competition and destabilizes the Community market. It is not possible for the sugar sector to cope with the unprecedented increase in to cope with imports and to function in a stable manner in the short and medium term.”
Growers are also calling on the European Commission to take measures to protect European markets against the flow of products from Ukraine.
