Poznań University of Technology will not receive the funds promised by the previous government for the construction of an innovation center and a quantum computer. The reason given was that he was a “PiS pet”.
The Ministry of Science and Higher Education has suspended the payment of PLN 200 million that the university received from the United Right government. The money would be allocated to the construction of the Technology Transfer and Innovation Center, within which a quantum computer would be created at the Poznań University of Technology. As the media wrote, the institution was intended to strengthen the competitiveness of the Polish economy in the European arena. Construction work would start in early 2026-2027.
Tusk’s government suspends the funds
However, it turns out that the center and the quantum computer may not be created. Donald Tusk’s government has withheld almost PLN 2 billion in funding for universities across the country, which was allocated by the previous Minister of Education and Science, Przemysław Czarnek. The new management of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education wants to conduct an audit and determine who has received specific amounts and for what. In the case of the Poznań University of Technology, this amounts to the above-mentioned PLN 200 million. The reason given by the Ministry of Science is quite peculiar.
– Pieszczochy are the universities you are talking about, which receive special treatment. The money you are talking about goes to universities, which, as you know, have received special treatment in recent years. 8 billion złoty were distributed for investments and this mainly went to universities politically connected to you, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Marek Gzik told PiS MPs, quoted by Radio Poznań.
The university authorities are yet to comment on the issue. In recent years, the university has received government bonds worth PLN 152 million. The Ministry of Science and Higher Education claims that other universities in Poznań could not count on similar support.
The ministry assures that the decision to withhold the money does not mean a refusal. After analyzing the application, it will be possible to re-release funds for the University of Poznań.
