Workers face extreme heat: Almost half of companies are outside the norm

August may not be synonymous with holidays for everyone, and for the less fortunate who find themselves working during the hottest weeks of the year, there are a number of measures that companies must implement to protect their employees from the extreme heat. However, checks carried out by the National Labour Inspectorate since the end of July have revealed that around 40 per cent of the 736 companies inspected were not complying with the rules.

Non-compliance by companies could have a serious impact on the health of workers in the sectors considered most at risk: construction and road construction sites, agriculture, the floriculture sector. In these areas, the Inspectorate is carrying out an extraordinary control campaign that will continue until the end of August.

Institutional breaches

The most significant violations detected in companies include failure to assess microclimate risk, failure to verify by the customer that the POS (operational safety plan) complies with the PSC (safety and coordination plan) and failure to provide workers with special protection measures against atmospheric influences. Failure to assess microclimate risk entails a fine that can exceed 2800 euros.
