CNEL, Massimiliano Monnanni appointed new Secretary General. Bruneta: “Great news”

The new Secretary General of the CNEL is Massimiliano Monnanni, appointed during the Council of Ministers meeting today, 4 June 2024, on the proposal of President Giorgia Meloni and with the favourable opinion of President Renato Brunetta. The appointment will now be formalised by decree of the President of the Republic. “The appointment of Dr Monnanni – declared President Brunetta – is great news for the CNEL, because it rewards a figure of undoubted value and great professionalism. It is a fair recognition of the work carried out to date, as head of the Technical Secretariat. My most sincere congratulations go to him. I would also like to thank the Government and in particular Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni for the attention and institutional sensitivity she has shown towards the National Council for the Economy and Labour. The selection of the new Secretary General represents a fundamental step in the process of strengthening governance and the global relaunch of the CNEL”.

Head of the Technical Secretariat of the President of CNEL since June 2023, a professional journalist since 1994 and a specialist in social policies, Massimiliano Monnanni comes from Poste Italiane, where he has been head of the Group’s Corporate Social Responsibility function since November 2017. Previously, for the Presidency of Poste, he managed institutional relations with administrations and bodies of national importance, the local self-government system, trade associations and social partners. From 2015 to 2018, he was also Secretary General of the Poste Insieme Onlus Foundation. At the public administration level, he has held numerous positions of responsibility in the past. Between 2009 and 2012, Monnanni was in fact Director General of UNAR (Office for the promotion of equal treatment and the elimination of discrimination) in the Department for Equal Opportunities of the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. From 2008 to 2011 he was Advisor to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, first for relations with the local self-government system and the Mediterranean countries, then for the promotion and protection of human rights, also covering the role of Secretary-General of the CIDU (Interministerial Commission on Human Rights) from 2011 to 2012 and, previously, from 2003 to 2005.

From 2005 to 2009, Monnanni was Manager of the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Lazio Region, dealing with youth policies and relations with citizens and social groups. From 2004 to 2007, he represented Italy as a deputy member of the Management Board of the European Commission Agency EUMC (European Monitoring Centre on Racism and Xenophobia).
