Does Tusk want to spend billions on this? Matysiak: To say the least, priorities are not in order

Paulina Matysiak shows what can be financed with the 65 billion Polish taxpayers’ money that Prime Minister Tusk wants to spend on organizing the Olympic Games.

Donald Tusk provided information about the government’s efforts to host the Olympic Games during a joint press conference with Sports Minister Sławomir Nitras at the Orlik sports field in Karczew.

Will Poland try to host the Olympics? Tusk announced a surprise decision

– We have been working for months to make this dream of the Olympic Games in Poland a reality. (…) I dedicate this decision to today’s 12- and 15-year-olds that Poland will formally attempt to host the Olympic Games, Donald Tusk said. As he noted, time will tell whether this is a realistic goal. He also announced that the government would take this matter seriously.

The Prime Minister’s words indicate that Poland’s efforts will relate to the event in 2040 or 2044. – We have already managed to achieve more than one thing, maybe not on this scale, but maybe Poland, as you remember, can achieve really great things if it perseveres – said the head of the government.

Matysiak: To say the least, priorities are out of order

Given the economic situation of the country and the state of Polish finances, there is no enthusiasm for this idea among the opposition, but it is also not visible among the left. Among others, the following people spoke about this: MP from the Razem party Paulina Matysiak, recently associated mainly with the demand to develop cross-party support for the construction of the CPK.

The parliamentarian shared her views on website X. She listed a number of arguments for directing Polish taxpayers’ money in a completely different direction than sports games worth billions of zloty.

“The announcement of the organization of the Olympic Games, the cost of which could amount to about PLN 65 billion, shows that the thinking about development priorities in the state leadership is, to put it mildly, flawed. We have an underfunded civil service, health care, demographic collapse, shrinking district towns and villages, and the threat of war, exclusion from communications, plowed civil defense, and we want to organize two-week Games in Warsaw,” we read on Matysiak’s profile. “Let’s focus on priorities!” – appeals to the MP.

Taxpayer’s money. This can be financed for 65 billion

For PLN 65 billion we can: finance a significant pro-demographic package (for example, increasing maternity and parental leave pay to 100% for the entire duration of the leave), finance more than half of the construction of a nuclear power plant (costing about PLN 100 billion), finance more than half of the construction of the CPK program (costing about PLN 130 billion), build civil protection infrastructure and train personnel responsible for crisis management at municipal and poviat level (more than PLN 100 billion is needed), implement solutions to support the aging society,” the politician lists.

“Meanwhile, Donald Tusk is proposing a model of success, which he will try to cover up with sham activities in strategic areas for Poland’s development. The Olympic stadiums in Warsaw will not fill empty classrooms or finance hospitals. They will not ensure the safety of residents of Kutno, Sieradz or Braniewo, they will not provide cheap housing for families in Warsaw, Kraków or Poznań,” he emphasizes.

“So the choice is simple: sustainable development for all Poles, no two-week competitions in Warsaw,” summarizes Paulina Matysiak.
