The fact that one investment has not been stopped does not completely change the picture of the government’s performance on key development issues, says Mateusz Morawiecki.
The European Commission has approved state aid to Intel, paving the way for the construction of the company’s factory near Wrocław.
Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digitalization Krzysztof Gawkowski announced on Friday that the American giant’s factory has received over PLN 7.4 billion in government aid for the period 2024-2026. – Today, this investment, both in terms of the aid package and the entire package, is worth more than PLN 25 billion, the politician said, as quoted by Reuters news agency.
A great investment from Intel
During the PiS government, Poland promised Intel about PLN 6 billion for the construction of a factory near Wrocław. However, this had to be approved by the European Commission first. The first step was to submit a notification to Brussels. According to the announcements made by former Digital Minister Janusz Cieszyński in June last year, this document was to be sent by the end of 2023, but this did not happen. The government of Donald Tusk also postponed submitting an application to the European Commission for approval to grant state aid to an American project. Eventually, the document was sent and the EC approved it.
Bringing Intel to Poland was one of the flagship projects of the government of Mateusz Morawiecki and the largest foreign direct investment in our country.
“Surprise? Shock?”
“It is good that at least one of the important strategic investments was not swept under the carpet just because it was initiated by the previous PiS government (although there were such concerns a few months ago). Information about Intel Corporation’s investment plans in the Semiconductor Integration and Testing Plant in Miękini, near Wrocław, will appear in 2023,” Mateusz Morawiecki said about the X Platform. “At that time, I stressed that these activities were a very important element in strengthening transatlantic ties. The economy and the development of new technologies should be the basis on which we would build good relations with an important partner for Poland, namely the United States. It was and still is the right strategy,” he added.
“Surprise? Shock? Mateusz Morawiecki praises the actions of the current government! I can already see these headlines in the media. But not to be so rosy: let’s be clear: the fact that one investment has not been stopped does not completely change the picture of the government’s actions on important development issues. What about nuclear energy? These questions remain open, as well as how exactly the cooperation with Intel will continue and what the final size of the investment will be, all the better for Poland. “But of course I wish Poland, its business and Poland much success,” Morawiecki stressed.
