With new connections to summer tourist destinations, cities of art and villages, the 2024 Summer Experience of the Passenger Hub of the Fs Group, made up of Trenitalia (leading company), Busitalia, Ferrovie del Sud Est and Fs Treni Turistici, will kick off on 9 June. The new summer offer includes more than 700 tourist destinations, from North to South of Italy, which can be reached daily by train, bus and intermodal connections.

“Trains play a key role in people’s lives, not only as a means of transport, but also as a place and space where it is possible to consolidate and spread a common culture in favour of health, inclusion and sustainability. The Trenitalia Summer Experience that we are presenting today allows us to offer a unique model of excellence, thanks to the thousands of trains and buses that transport millions of people every day”, said Stefano Cuzzilla, President of Trenitalia. With the new timetable, more than 270 Frecce, with over 130,000 seats, will travel daily throughout the Iberian Peninsula, together with Intercity trains that will reach more than 230 cities, including 70 summer destinations, and 6,000 Regional trains that will reach more than 1,700 destinations, including 500 tourist destinations. Completing the offer are Fs Treni Turistici Italiani with the new Espresso Versilia and Espresso Riviera and the Espresso Cadore, which returns for the summer season, the more than 9,700 daily connections of Busitalia and the approximately 1,000 train and bus journeys of Ferrovie del South East. Intermodal services are also growing with connections to 19 ports and 23 airports, to which are added 12 Freccia Link routes, in connection with Frecce and 159 connections to tourist destinations in connection with Regional trains.

“We have had an extraordinary year, with a significant increase in customer satisfaction in terms of service quality and reliability. The many initiatives implemented over the past three years have helped us improve our customer satisfaction results, and our entire offering is permeated by sustainability, which translates into investments in a younger fleet, intermodal services that allow you to get out of the car, and technological innovations that will guarantee an even more complete and high-quality travel experience. We are looking forward to the summer with enthusiasm. Forecasts for 2024 point to further growth, supported by internal demand for all business divisions and companies in the Hub, in particular for the tourism segment; with a significant boost also coming from international connections,” said Luigi Corradi, CEO and CEO of Trenitalia.

2024 promises to be a positive year: in the first quarter alone, 268 million people travelled on board FS Group Passenger Hub vehicles (+5% compared to 2023), of which 191 million were in Italy. In the same period, Trenitalia transported 150 million travellers who, by travelling by train, generated savings of €700 million in environmental and social costs (healthcare costs, damage to the environment, agriculture, buildings and biodiversity) and avoided the emission of 900,000 tonnes of CO2 into the air compared to using cars.

In 2023, investment expenditure exceeded €1.8 billion, of which €1.1 billion was earmarked for fleet renewal. Frecciarossa has an investment plan of over €1 billion for the acquisition of 46 new trains that will start operating by the end of 2025. In the last 5 years, 459 new Rock, Pop and Blues trains have entered service for regional transport and more than 300 new generation vehicles will arrive by 2027, for a total investment of €6.8 billion. The new Intercity hybrid trains, which operate in Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia, were purchased with Pnrr funds, an investment of €60 million that is part of a broader plan for the South, again financed with Pnrr funds. Busitalia plans to purchase 795 Euro 6 electric, hybrid and diesel HVO buses for a value of over €313 million. In addition, for FSE, financing from the Development and Cohesion Fund of over €10 million will enable the purchase of 38 new hybrid buses, of which 7 will be delivered in the summer.
