The Senate is unanimous on freezing electricity prices

The Senate has not proposed any amendments to the bill on electricity price freezes. Until September 2025, the government will subsidize energy so that bills do not rise.

92 senators voted in favor of the resolution on freezing electricity prices, none opposed and none abstained.

The Senate supported freezing electricity prices

The amendment to the Law on Emergency Measures, aimed at limiting electricity prices, primarily stipulates that households must maintain the maximum electricity price at PLN 500 per MWh net until the end of September 2025. Such a step was announced by Prime Minister Tusk in November.

Until the end of March 2025, local government units and sensitive entities can benefit from the maximum price of PLN 693 per MWh net. This solution is expected to cost another PLN 150 million.

Let us not forget that these changes do not mean that electricity has become cheaper, but that the government will pay extra from the budget, i.e. from taxes, so that the price on the bills does not increase. Ultimately, consumers pay for electricity prices.

Freezing energy prices before 2025. Costs over PLN 5 billion

The justification for the energy price freeze project stated that “despite the relative stabilization on energy markets” it was decided to continue the protective measures for households in 2025 by applying the maximum electricity price mechanism also in 2025.

It was proposed to add provisions to improve the process of verification of the provision of public support to the micro, small and medium-sized enterprises sector, meaning that the maximum electricity price will be applied to them in the second half of 2024.

Increasing salaries for teachers

The Senate has not tabled any amendments to the provisions providing for an increase in the pay of beginning teachers or a mechanism to make the budget more flexible to more quickly combat the consequences of, for example, floods. The bills now go to the president.
