The President on a free Christmas Eve: The situation has changed considerably

After the law was passed, the situation changed significantly. My attitude towards this is also somewhat suspended, President Andrzej Duda said about the free Christmas Eve.

Andrzej Duda invited workers and employers to the presidential palace for public consultations on the change to the law, which assumes that Christmas Eve is a day off.

Consult with the president. What’s next for a free Christmas Eve?

This concerns a bill submitted by left-wing MPs on the introduction of December 24 as a day off. As a result of the amendments of the Sejm and the Senate, the final law stipulates that from 2025 onwards, Christmas Eve (December 24) will be a day off for all employees, including employees of commercial institutions. Christmas Eve is preceded by three shopping Sundays. A trade employee may not work more than two Sundays in December.

Opening the meeting, the president noted that he was initially in favor of making Christmas Eve a day off. He also heard positive opinions about this proposal, as he admitted, among other things: when purchasing in stores.

However, following the introduction of parliamentary amendments, these views have changed because, as he argued, the law in its final form is no longer as beneficial to employees – they tended to work shorter hours on Christmas Eve and while working (in return for compensation). free Christmas Eve) on an additional Sunday, they will have to work in the usual mode.

Andrzej Duda: My attitude towards it is suspended

– It is simply not profitable for us and we feel a bit cheated – Duda quoted his interlocutors who work in the trade. – This situation has actually changed, to say the least and seriously, and my attitude towards it has been somewhat suspended – he said.

He also expressed regret that no public consultations were held on such an important issue for Poland before the final form of the law was adopted.

Parliament adopted the relevant provisions on 6 December. The president has 21 days to decide whether to sign the bill, veto it or refer it to the Constitutional Court.
