Gazprom cut off gas to Poland and Bulgaria, which did not pay the bill in rubles. The Russian gas company announced this on Wednesday.
Bulgaria and Poland are transit countries that export imported gas to other European countries. “Using Russian gas going to other countries will reduce throughput as much as the amount used,” Gazprom said.
On March 31, Russian President Vladimir Putin issued a decree demanding that gas delivered from April 1 be levied in rubles. A special construction has been built for this.
Gazprom now says that as of the end of the business day on April 26, this requirement has not been met. “Therefore, Gazprom Export has informed Bulgargaz and PGNiG that gas distribution will be suspended from April 27 until payments are made in accordance with the decision process.”
Bulgargaz and PGNiG are Bulgarian and Polish public gas companies respectively.
