Russia cuts off gas from Poland and Bulgaria: here are the results

The price on the gas market today is approx. 108 euros per megawatt hour† This is an increase of more than 15% from the news before the announcement of the Russian decision on April 26.

And Dutch companies realize this, because what they pay for is often obtained directly at the market price. And many companies have no choice but to pass this price increase on to the consumer.

1. Why does the gas price rise immediately?

It’s simple: uncertainty, explains Van den Beukel. “What else can we expect in this area? But for now it’s all nervousness, don’t panic yet, he says.

Van den Beukel sees Putin’s threat as “a blow to the bow of other European countries”. “Putin has really done everything: he gives everything, the stakes are increasing.” More and more are at stake.

The gas price is much less overreacting than previous Russian stocks (see chart below). “In any case, this shows that Putin is not expected to attack Germany and Italy for the time being.”

Van den Beukel adds that the way Russia chooses which country to punish seems rather arbitrary. This may be related to the fact that Poland and Bulgaria are small buyers. But Putin may have chosen Poland for its role in shipping weapons to Ukraine.
