Women still earn less than men, but the pay gap is narrowing

The gender pay gap has still not closed, but has narrowed again in the past year. According to Statistics Netherlands, the average gross hourly wage for women was 13% lower than for men last year.

In 2021, women earned an average of 22.84 euros per hour, while men earned 25.84 euros. The difference is mainly explained by the asymmetric male-female ratio in the highest paid jobs: two-thirds of the jobs with an hourly wage of more than 32 euros are occupied by men.

Ten years ago, men earned an average of 18% more hourly wages than women. According to Statistics Netherlands, the difference is partly explained by the fact that women are increasingly better educated.

If you look at the annual salary, the salary difference is much larger. Over the whole of 2021, women earned on average 36% less than men. One explanation is that women work fewer hours on average.
