Van Gogh Museum has to pay 60,000 euros extra to dismissed board member

Gordenker and Winter: old acquaintances

Notable in the above impeachment procedure is the role of the chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Van Gogh Museum.

In the Netherlands, Jaap Winter is seen as a leading expert in the field of corporate governance or the proper management of organizations. Since 2017, he has been chairman of the supervisory board of ‘het Van Gogh’.

During the conversation, commercial director Van Dam went to Winter with concerns about the new CEO Gordenker at the end of 2020 and expressed concern that he would be fired as a result of that conversation. According to Van Dam, Winter promised him at the time to put an end to it.

Winter later denied this, but at the appeal hearing, the business professor did not show up to answer questions. The court therefore does not rule out the possibility that he actually made a commitment.

Winter and Gordenker are old acquaintances. Between 2004 and 2014, Winter was a member of the supervisory board of the Mauritshuis in The Hague, where Gordenker has been director since 2008. After Winter left the museum in The Hague, his wife Lokke Moerel became an auditor there. Top lawyer has been chairman of the supervisory board of the Mauritshuis since 2018.

Gordenker Selection

Because Winter knew Gordenker well, according to a museum statement, he would have avoided being nominated for the best work of the Van Gogh Museum at the time.

This seems to contradict the statement in the annual accounts of the Van Gogh Museum. It states that “all members of the supervisory board fully participate in the selection process”.

In a statement last year, the museum said it would not interfere with the assessment of Winter’s candidacy, but ultimately with the assessment of the selected candidates.
