Of the 100 bicycles sold last year, 52 were electric. For example, sales of electric bicycles surpassed sales of regular bicycles for the first time. This was announced on Thursday on the basis of figures from market research by GfK commissioned by the BOVAG and RAI associations.
It is also striking that the number of bicycles sold has dropped below one million for the first time since 2017. This is due to delivery problems.
Last year, 923,000 new bicycles were sold. That was almost 16% less than the year before, when enthusiasts bought 1.1 million new bicycles.
The average price of a bicycle has risen. This is partly because more e-bikes, often more expensive, have been sold. On average, an electric bicycle cost about 2,400 euros last year. That is more than 6% compared to a year ago.
Last year fewer bicycles were sold due to problems with the delivery of bicycles and parts. In 2020, the first corona year, many logistical problems arose because the demand for bicycles increased sharply. These issues were only resolved last year, forcing consumers to wait longer and order less for their two-wheeled vehicle.
