Duque announces that ten new thermal power plants will be commissioned in Colombia

Colombia will close this year with 2,800 megawatts of installed generation capacity, assured President Iván Duque, emphasizing that ten new thermal generation projects are expected to come on stream after the reliability tax auctions.

“It’s a feat that speaks for itself of how regulatory signals can open up a new strategic aspect of the energy sector, but the potential we have in unconventional renewables hasn’t stopped us from thinking about traditional ones.” said the leader.

Among the projects to be commissioned are TermoValle (90MW), TermoYopal (150MW), Tesorito (200MW) and Termocandelaria, which will go from 319 to more than 500 MW with closed loop operations. In addition, Phase 1 Hidroituango with 600MW is expected to start before September this year.

“The message is that the promised energy reliability has been consolidated in these four years,” he explained during the installation of the Annual Energy Congress of the Colombian Association of Electricity Generators (Acolgen).
