The shortages in the security industry are so great that companies are failing to secure events, especially when it comes to last-minute meetings. It will therefore come as no surprise to the players that the municipality of Amsterdam was unable to hire enough guards on the Museumplein for a possible tribute to Ajax.
Sander van der Walle of W&R Security regularly has to say ‘no’, for example recently at a major ten-day trade fair. He also has clients that he has worked with for years. “It’s so boring,” he said.
For many security guards in the catering and event industry, security is a part-time job. When he saw almost forty percent of his people leave, says Van der Walle, the security guards started doing other things during the corona crisis, when little or nothing was open and continued.
“They were looking for something different or also loved it at home on the couch. And I have the idea that the young people themselves want to go outside and actually do not want to work, and they also survived during the corona.”
