FC Barcelona loses Coutinho to Aston Villa for 115 million euros less

Philippe Coutinho continues his career at Aston Villa. The Brazilian playmaker comes from FC Barcelona and is under contract with the central engine of the Premier League until mid-2026. Barcelona confirmed on Thursday that they will receive €20 million and 50% of Villa’s future transfer proceeds.

At the beginning of 2018, Barcelona lost 29-year-old Coutinho from Liverpool for 135 million euros, but was unable to live up to expectations in Catalonia. He played in 106 official games, scored 25 goals and provided 14 assists.

Coutinho was surprisingly acquired by Aston Villa earlier this year on a lease basis with an option to buy. The club from Birmingham has now benefited from that. The midfielder, who has played so far, has played 16 league games for Villa, scoring 4 goals.

“He is a great asset to Aston Villa,” coach Steven Gerrard told Aston Villa’s website. Phil is a professional role model and clearly influences the group. He is also a role model for our young players with the way he manages himself on and off the pitch.”

Coutinho has not been a decisive player in Barcelona in recent years. He was loaned to Bayern Munich for the 2019/2020 season, after which he had to miss the entire previous season due to a serious knee injury.

Coutinho had his best time at Liverpool, although he did not win any trophies with the top English club. He won the Champions League with Bayern. He celebrated a league title with the Germans and also won two titles with Barcelona.
