US Department of Agriculture: Grain harvest dropped due to war in Ukraine

In the next crop year, 775 million tons of wheat will be harvested worldwide, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Four million less than last year.

At the same time, demand is high: USDA estimates 788 million tons of wheat will be consumed worldwide next year. The harvest takes several blows, leading to grain shortages.

Concerns about wheat shortages have been circulating for some time. But now we have calculated the size of the hole for the first time.

war in Ukraine

The Russian invasion of Ukraine is the worst blow. In many parts of the country it is not possible to harvest because of the war. The yield is also lower.

Another culprit is the weather: due to drought, the harvest in Morocco is at its lowest since 2008. In India, however, arable farmers are suffering from heat waves. Smaller harvests are also expected in the European Union and China.
