India banned the export of wheat. The heat wave limited production and domestic prices rose sharply. Authorities say this threatens food security in India. This decision could further increase the wheat price on the world market.
India’s ban is notable, as the country used to depend on record wheat exports.
The world market could use Indian grain this year. Due to the war in this country, it is not possible to export from Ukraine. Both the United States and France are dealing with weather conditions that make growing the important grain difficult.
Worries about wheat are driving up bread prices, among other things. According to figures from Statistics Netherlands, bread and grains in the Netherlands were almost 6% more expensive last month than a year ago. But the poorest countries and population groups in Africa and Asia are especially hard hit by rising food prices.
