The number of food trucks has increased by 110% since 2017, from about 1,200 to just under 2,500, the Chamber of Commerce (KVK) reported on Tuesday. Most food trucks are located in North and South Holland.
With the holidays approaching, food trucks are waking up from hibernation. It is growing and moving away from the hamburger and chip shops of the past. Between 2017 and today, more than twice as many companies started a food truck.
According to Onno van Gent of the Foodtruckbooking.com platform, these days it mainly concerns fresh food trucks. “Consumers value food quality and at the same time demand innovation. “A good food truck distinguishes itself through fresh and healthy food combined with a unique concept.”
45% of the food trucks are located in North and South Holland. There are only 51 food trucks in Drenthe. But location doesn’t really matter, says Van Gent. “Food truck entrepreneurs are used to traveling far for festivals or events.”
Food trucks are increasingly being hired to serve food at company or family parties. In a way it makes their job easier because then they can perfectly predict how much to buy and therefore it is easier for them to set their price. “Prices go up faster at festivals because they have to give the organization a percentage and they are less sure of how much to sell,” says Van Gent.
According to Van Gent, the increase in the number of food truck companies is now slowly coming to an end. It expects existing businesses to expand now to continue generating sufficient revenue.
