The airline is far from repaying the state aid it received during the pandemic. Nevertheless, KLM believes that deferred salary increases should be allowed to continue. This is retroactive to March 1 of this year.
Labor market shortage
In this way, the company wants to prevent its employees from feeling too much inflation in their wallets. “With today’s decision, KLM, like many other companies in the Netherlands, is creating financial space for its employees to compensate for the rapidly rising inflation,” the company said in a statement.
The company itself is also interested in wage increases because of the severe shortage in the labor market. Ultimately, the salary increase will make KLM a more attractive employer.
inflation in recent years
Inflation was 1.3% in 2020 and 2.7% in 2021. The workforce will therefore increase by 1% in these two years. However, according to the latest forecast from the Central Planning Bureau, inflation will exceed 6% this year. The staff has not yet been compensated for this.
