Long queues cause frustration and tension among passengers. Sometimes it comes time to miss their flight. For example, the Maréchaussée intervened this weekend when a group of travelers expressed their dismay at guards who were ending their shift.
“Sometimes the cleaners have fun,” says Joost van Doesburg of FNV. “And we were told that the KLM employees who organized the check-in had to be removed from their workplace under the guard of the Marechaussee.” He also says that some employees have “literally lost weight” because of the workload.
FNV is now threatening with further measures if there is no agreement to ease the workload as of 1 June. The union says it has been in talks with Schiphol for weeks. “There is not much to say about the progress yet.” Earlier, FNV had already indicated that an agreement had to be reached before the summer.
new guards
Staff shortages are particularly common among baggage handlers and security guards. After the chaotic May holiday scenes, Schiphol CEO Dick Benschop expressed the hope that he would be able to hire five hundred new security officers before the summer holidays. At that time there were 100 people in training.
Schiphol cannot say at the moment how bad the vulnerabilities are: “The security companies are responsible for this,” says a spokesperson. The same applies to baggage handlers employed by KLM or transport companies.
According to FNV Schiphol, part of the problem lies in this answer: “Safety is also a very important part of the process at Schiphol,” says Van Doesburg.
The union therefore demands not only higher wages and a good working environment, but also greater involvement from Schiphol Group in the processes.
