Last year, 40.5 billion euros worth of goods were transported via the North Sea from the Netherlands to the UK. That is one fifth less than in 2019, according to figures from the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
Foreign trade in goods to England via the Netherlands has almost halved, but the export of Dutch goods has actually increased. The latter is of much greater importance for the Dutch economy, says Anton Valk of the British Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands, which promotes trade between the two countries. NOS Radio 1 News.
According to the British Chamber of Commerce in the Netherlands, such a decrease in the transit of foreign goods is mainly due to Brexit. The UK has been importing many products directly from other countries since Brexit.
According to the CBS, Asian trade flows have shifted, among other things. “High-tech goods, but also medicines and clothing entered the UK via the Netherlands, among other things,” the CBS researchers write. “The UK may now be importing these goods directly.”
According to Valk, Dutch ports in particular lose out on turnover as a result, but the added value for the Dutch economy is relatively low.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, had more leftovers than exports of its own manufactures. Dutch entrepreneurs mainly sold more computers and special machines to the British.
“You notice that things are going relatively well,” says Valk. NOS Radio 1 News† “Although it is more difficult to do business despite the borders. Greetings to all Dutch entrepreneurs.”
Exports of petrol, diesel and kerosene fell on a liter basis, but high fuel prices increased their value.
Dutch flower growers also benefited from the high prices. They also sold more flowers and plants. Car manufacturers sold so few trucks and passenger cars that the value of this industry’s exports fell by a fifth.
Despite declining exports, the UK remains one of the main export destinations. More goods were only exported to Germany and Belgium.
Business Services
In addition, the Dutch are increasingly offering their services to customers in the UK. The British paid 29 billion euros for it in 2021. That is 58% more than in 2015 and 13% in 2019, the last two criteria of the Dutch Statistics.
The main form of export of services is legal services and business services such as accounting. That brought in 9.8 billion euros last year.
