Stolk says that flying less makes a significant difference in CO2 emissions. He calculates: A family of four in Bali that leaves for two weeks by plane emits 13,400 kilos of CO2. A comparable flight to the Canary Islands: 4700 kilos. Camping with car and tent to the south of France: 630 kilos. “This includes overnight stays.”
The further you go, the bigger the difference in favor of the train, he says. “Flight kilometers are increasing rapidly. The difference in environmental impact is huge. The mode of transport makes a big difference, but so does the distance.”
Prague: 50 to 260 kilos
Our “” city trip to Prague generates 260 kilos of CO2 per person per plane for the outward and return journey. By train that is 50 kilos per person, five times less. Stolk: “And if you stay two nights less in a hotel, that saves 35 pounds per person for the entire journey. For one night we gain 17.5 kilos per person per night.”
With the car in Prague you radiate 340 kilos. “85 kilos per car, so if you go with four people.”
Stolk applauds the use of the night train: “Regular trains are particularly popular among young people. We think the night train will appeal to a wider audience. Slowly but surely, more and more people are opening up to this mode of transport.
