German auto group Volkswagen reached £193 million in the UK as a result of the diesel scandal, which turned into 227 million euros. The agreement was reached with approximately 91 thousand car owners of Volkswagen and its subsidiaries SKODA, Audi and SEAT.
The group filed a joint complaint against Volkswagen in 2016 for falsifying diesel engine emissions.
Volkswagen also said it will reimburse plaintiffs for legal costs, among other things, but will not compromise liability. The company says the deal will avoid high costs for lawsuits and appeals. “The Volkswagen Group is pleased to conclude this lengthy legal process in England and Wales,” the statement said.
The company also speaks of another step towards closing the “deplorable events” surrounding the diesel scandal that erupted in 2015. In addition, with special software, the emissions of diesel cars during the tests were lower than expected. Volkswagen had to spend billions of dollars worldwide and pay fines for the scandal.
The law firm that assisted the plaintiffs says it is proud of the agreement reached with Volkswagen. “Reconciliation eliminates a long, complex and costly process, and we are pleased to have reached this settlement for our collective claim clients.”
