Endless queues, canceled flights, dangerous situations: the problems at Schiphol are great and the summer holidays have not yet started.
CEO Dick Benschop yesterday outlined a plan to make things run smoothly, including by hiring more staff and optimizing passenger flow.
‘There are 500 jobs in security alone’
The trade union CNV estimates that the problems will only be solved after the summer, because the labor market is now too tight. “It takes weeks or months to get over it,” says Erik Maas of CNV Vakmensen.
“In private security alone, the shortage of people is estimated at 500 vacancies, which is a huge gap. Schiphol has to be realistic about it: you don’t have that for July, August.”
Lots of negative stories
Leon Vincken, director of the professional association VBe, is not too positive either. “I see desperate hope for Schiphol. There are shortages on all fronts of the labor market, including in security companies. You do not meet these 1-2-3. And the unions don’t help: because they take action, they spread a lot of negative stories about the security profession.”
Vincken believes that you should keep your wallet small to attract short-term staff. “Many people lost their jobs when the flexible shell was phased out during the Corona era. They couldn’t get paid anymore, so they started doing other things. I only really see a trend when I come back, after two years of corona weather, everyone is doing it again. I want to go on vacation, so I can’t.”
Leaving existing staff
There is also another risk: the existing staff may choose to do something else. “The security guards weigh in,” says Maas. “This work-life balance is no longer possible for me,” says Schiphol about its employees.
“It’s nice to have an action plan presented, but the pressure is still very high from day to day. They can also work in a quieter place.”
Negotiations on a social plan for Schiphol staff will continue next week.
