Greece reacted angrily today to the seizure of two Greek ships by Iran. The State Department calls it “an act of piracy.”
Two tankers were detained by the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps in the Persian Gulf. Army helicopters landed on deck and those on board were arrested. The crew is charged with misconduct, but the guards’ testimonies do not reveal exactly what they did wrong.
revenge action
It appears to be revenge for the seizure of an Iranian ship last month in Greek waters on behalf of the United States. Earlier today, Tehran threatened Athens with punishing Greece for its involvement. According to the US, the oil on the Iranian ship was seized as part of “punitive intervention”.
It is not yet known how many people were on board the two Greek tankers. According to the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there were at least seven Greeks on board and an unknown number of civilians on the other side. People of other nationalities also travel by tanker.
Greece demands the immediate release of those on board. He threatened the foreign ministry that there would otherwise be “particularly negative consequences” for bilateral relations between the two countries and the EU as a whole.
Negotiations stalled
Tensions rise in the background between the West and Iran amid the deadlock in negotiations for a new nuclear deal. The sides cannot agree on new agreements that would limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions in exchange for economic concessions and the lifting of sanctions.
Iran regularly seizes tankers in the Persian Gulf. Experts often see this as Tehran’s way of putting extra pressure on negotiations with the West.
