NS will probably try it with e-bike rental this summer

NS wants to start a summer trial with electric bicycle rental. The carrier wants to test for a year whether the electric bicycles, the so-called public transport, appeal to users.

NS presented the pilot idea to consumer organisations, ProRail and municipalities. They responded in the affirmative, an NS spokesperson told NU.nl. According to him, the chance of not being tested is small.

NS says that travelers have already applied for an e-bike. During these months, the four stations will be equipped with about thirty electric bicycles.

The electric bike should cost 10 euros for 24 hours. It is not yet known at which stations the e-bikes will be parked.

Theft can be a risk

NS recognizes that stealing e-bikes can be a risk. The bikes are equipped with a GPS tracker. In the event of loss or theft, the bicycle can be found.

The NS also wants to use this GPS information for research during the trial. This makes it possible to map information about, for example, distances traveled, bicycle position and speed.

Personal data and location data are stored separately to protect the privacy of the consumer, the carrier assures. For example, the supplier knows where the e-bike in question is, but not who is on the bike.
