ANVR, the professional association of travel organizations, is suing Schiphol. The travel industry wants Schiphol to compensate the damage caused by the chaos at the airport this summer.
The ANVR says that many travel organizations could go bankrupt due to the problems. Schiphol plans to cancel flights this summer to avoid major problems at the airport.
ANVR director Frank Oostdam finds the cancellation of flights incomprehensible. “It is absolutely unacceptable that Schiphol does not keep its personnel policy in order and that as a result many Dutch holidaymakers run the risk of having their holiday go wrong.”
In a response, Schiphol says that the details of the plans for the summer are still being drawn up and what the consequences will be for travelers remains to be seen.
“Communication is pointless”
Travel agents are often wanted by anxious travelers, according to Oostdam, but organizations cannot tell you much yet. “As soon as this becomes known to the airlines, our customers will be informed as soon as possible. Until then, it actually makes no sense to contact travel agencies ANVR and customers are requested not to do so either.”
According to the ANVR, cancellations can cause problems because hotels and missed trips are not covered by Schiphol.
Harbers: accountability for uncertainty among travelers
Minister Harbers of Infrastructure has asked Schiphol and airlines to take into account the “irritating uncertainty of passengers”. According to Harbers, it must be made clear to individual travelers as soon as possible whether their journey will go ahead.
The minister had previously warned Schiphol to solve the problems. He points out that the airport has now made agreements about better working conditions and reduced work pressure. “But I’ve also always said that there aren’t that many people right now. Every day when these people are not there, there is a choice between very long queues or making it clear to airlines so passengers know where they are.
In his own words, Harbers is at the top and he and Minister Kaag (as major shareholder of the airport) have almost daily contact with Schiphol.
