Red Bull Racing suspended Formula 2 driver Jury Vips on Tuesday. The Est is said to have made a racist comment while playing a video game earlier today.
Images circulating on social media showing 23-year-old VIPs playing the popular game Call of Duty: Warzone the word racistblack‘ he muttered. A loud laugh rang out over the stream.
Red Bull then decided to suspend VIPs. “As an organisation, we have a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to racist language in any form,” Formula 1 driver team Max Verstappen and Sergio Perez said in a statement. “We will conduct a full investigation into exactly what happened.”
Shortly after Red Bull’s announcement, Vips, who is also a reserve driver for the Formula 1 team, apologized. “I want to apologize unconditionally for the offensive language I used during a live stream earlier today,” Vips wrote on Instagram.
“This language is absolutely unacceptable and contrary to the values and principles I stand for. I deeply regret my actions. This is not the example I want to be and I will fully cooperate with the investigation.”
VIPs trained for free for Red Bull earlier this year
Vips, the current number seven in the Formula 2 championship, is considered one of the greatest talents in the Red Bull training program. Earlier this year, he took part in free practice at the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona as the second driver alongside Verstappen.
Initially, Vips was set to launch next week at the English circuit of Silverstone. Formula 2 team Hitech Grand Prix has not yet commented on the incident.
It is not the first time in motorsport that a driver has been banned for a racist incident during a race. Two years ago, American NASCAR driver Kyle Larson was banned for six months for saying the same word as VIPs during a virtual race.
