Synchronized swimmer Anita Alvarez lost consciousness on Wednesday while training for the World Swimming Championships in Budapest. The American had to be taken out of the water by his trainer Andrea Fuentes.
Alvarez, 25, shocked the crowd when he suddenly sank to the bottom. The Spanish trainer Fuentes, a successful synchronized swimmer in the past, did not hesitate for a moment and jumped after his student.
“I had to do it because nobody left the organization,” Fuentes said. Sign† “I was scared because I saw he wasn’t breathing, but thankfully he’s okay now.”
Alvarez stayed off the field and immediately sought medical attention. He doesn’t seem to be taking advantage of the unfortunate event, but he will undergo tests over the next few days to determine the cause of the fainting.
Fuentes is not worried. He points out that in other sports, athletes are more likely to pass out. “We know the images of the marathon and the bicycle. Our sport is no different. Sometimes we go beyond our limits in the pool.”
Alvarez has twice participated in the Olympics. Last year he was named the best synchronized swimmer in the United States.
Anita Alvarez was removed from the pool as quickly as possible.
