Leading US companies are taking back their employees after abortion decision

States can now legislate in this area themselves. Some states prohibit abortion or allow abortion only in cases of rape, incest, or when the mother’s life is in danger.

Different rules in each state

Companies are now defending their employees if they are ever faced with this new legislation.

Apple, Facebook’s parent company Meta Platforms, Disney and banks JP Morgan, Goldman and Bank of America said they will continue to compensate for travel to other states for a medical procedure or add abortion as a medical procedure to that provision. † †

Large companies often have employees in all kinds of US states, which now all have different rules.

Outdoor brand Patagonia and concert promoter Live Nation are taking it one step further, seeking to rescue staff arrested during abortion rights protests.

Taxi apps Uber and Lyft have previously said drivers in Texas will pay court fees if they have to transport pregnant women to an abortion clinic.

A law in Texas made it a crime to aid in an abortion. Other states also want to pass such laws.

Previously, major employers such as Amazon, Apple, Citigroup, Levi’s, Tesla and software company Salesforce have announced that they want to reimburse travel expenses for employees who live and work in states with restrictive labor laws.

For example, to keep it private and confidential, often in publicly traded companies, they choose to label the cost of these benefits as an “employee benefit” in their financial report.

‘Bad for the economy’

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said in May that the abortion ban would also hurt the economy. According to Yellen, abortion rights allowed more women to work and complete their education, resulting in higher wages for women.
