Portugal leads the decline in fixed internet prices in Europe with a 4.7% drop

The Association of Electronic Communications Operators (Apritel) said on Wednesday that Portugal is “leading the way in the decline in fixed internet prices” in Europe, falling 4.7% in the past 12 months, against a 0.9% increase. in the EU27.

“Portugal leads the way in the price decrease of fixed internet services. On average over the past 12 months, prices in Portugal for fixed internet services have fallen by 4.7%,” the association writes in a statement.

According to Apitrel, “parallel to this sharp price reduction, the coverage of fast fixed networks has increased, reaching 92.5% of all accommodations by 2021”.

“The most recent data from Eurostat, which refers to May 2022, shows once again the strong competitive dynamics of the Portuguese electronic communications market. In a context of general price increases in the economy, national communications services contribute to lower inflationary pressures in the national economy, by an evolution below verified inflation,” he says.

Apritel warns again that “the price evolution equations supported by the IHCP” [Índice Harmonizado de Preços no Consumidor] Eurostat cannot be used to compare price levels between countries, only their evolution, and with the necessary precautions”.

As he explains, “the biases of the analysis are all the greater the larger the time series are, as the IHCP changes the weights of each component from year to year, limiting the conclusions that can be drawn from long historical series. index”.

“This type of analysis is only relevant for macroeconomic assessments, such as inflation, for which the HICP was created,” he adds.
