As a result of the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has sent energy prices soaring, the country’s Andeg-affiliated thermal companies are warning they may be threatened by a shortage of coal for power generation.
Andeg’s president, Alejandro Castañeda, said it is essential that the government examines measures to prioritize the supply of this fuel for local consumption in this situation.
He pointed out that Colombia is no stranger to the international energy crisis and is also affected by higher prices of liquefied natural gas (LNG) imported for thermal generation and higher prices of thermal coal in the local generation market.
He indicates that this will have consequences for the competitiveness of electricity prices in the market in the medium term and generation prices in the energy market. He explained that coal-fired thermal power plants have stock in storage yards to meet fuel needs between 10 and 25 days.”
“Coal is essential for the diversification, reliability and competitiveness of the electricity system, especially in the context of the energy transition policy promoted by the national government, where this mineral will be important to evaluate the adoption of new technologies that allow to sustainable future even with the current crisis, leading countries in the energy transition are once again including coal in their electricity matrix around this discussion,” said Castañeda.
For its part, the Colombian Association of Major Industrial and Commercial Energy Consumers (Asoenergía) has asked the government to take urgent measures to enable the supply of thermal coal in the country in order to avoid shortages or shortages amid the rise in prices that this sector and power generation for the major industries of the country.
In a letter to the Minister of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa Puyo, Sandra Fonseca, Executive President of Asoenergía, requested that the security of coal supply be included in the offer to ensure the energy basket and the competitiveness of industry and the energy sector to ensure. matrix of the country, and be efficient as a reference in energy price formation and its security.
It is worth noting that increased international demand for coal at higher prices affects the availability of domestic supply and compliance with supply contracts, with which we respectfully request the national government to adopt measures to ensure the supply of thermal coal for local consumption, both for the power generation sector as well as the national industry, in light of the current state of energy prices in the international context,” the communication said.
