The debt burden of the non-financial sector, including governments, businesses and individuals, rose by 3.7 billion euros in May to a total of 793.6 billion euros.
The data comes from Banco de Portugal, which shows that private sector debt, including businesses and households, grew by EUR 1.4 billion, of which EUR 1 billion was for businesses and EUR 400 million for individuals. In total, the private sector has an accumulated debt of 436.3 billion.
But most of the increase in debt has come from the public sector: it rose by EUR 2.3 billion, of which EUR 1.3 billion was externally owed. In total, the accumulated government debt grew to EUR 357.3 billion.
Banco de Portugal reports that household debt has increased by 4.3% compared to the same period last year. Private companies grew by 4.2%
