Governments borrowed 600 million euros in the first five months of 2022, a value that is comparable to 7,800 million euros in the same period of 2021, reported Portugal (BDP) this Thursday.
According to the BDP, “the outside world financed government services with 6,100 million euros”. On the other hand, the financing provided by the banks was negative with 4,400 million euros.
Until May, the financing to the government was also negative by other resident sectors, namely -1,100 million euros.
Negative net financing indicates that the net purchases of financial assets are greater than the issues minus the depreciation of liabilities, ie that the government used part of the means obtained to finance other sectors of the economy.
An analysis per instrument shows that the government financed itself by net prior effects of securities for an amount of 10,100 million euros.
On the other hand, the financing of the government through loans was deducted from deposits 9,500 million euros negative.
The BDP updates the data on the financing of the government on 22 August.
