Istat, high prices put families in crisis: sharp drop in retail sales

Inflation weighs on household spending. The June Istat data on retail sales highlights, once again, the negative role played by the upward dynamics of prices, in particular of public services and other incompressible fixed costs, which leads Italians to reduce purchases while still spending more, with the risk of a true black autumn for consumption. Compared to June 2021, in fact, sales grew slightly in value (1.4%), but fell sharply in volume (3.8%). Furthermore, the general trend of increasing value is mainly driven by large-scale distribution: sales of companies operating in small surfaces remain paralyzed and, compared to last year, show a reduction of almost 1 point in value and a drop in the volume that we estimate to be of the order of 6 percentage points.

Companies, explains Confesercenti, are now forced to offset price increases that are no longer ‘redeemable’ from their margins while consumers tend to reduce purchases with mandatory expenses rising. A situation that is in danger of not being manageable anymore, these expenses are placed at the limit of 50% and Arera has raised the alarm: this winter, without international or domestic prices calming down, gas and electricity bills are at risk to double, after the increases registered so far, further affecting household consumption and, therefore, companies in the commerce and services sectors.

“We need to restore confidence and remove inflationary expectations: the Aid Decree puts in place all possible tools to support families and economic activities, with the extension and strengthening of fiscal measures aimed at containing the transmission of international prices on national prices ” The Confesercenti alarm.
